How do you communicate professionally with a brand?

TL;DR

Good communication makes you a creator brands want to work with again. Respond within a working day, keep your tone friendly and clear, and put all your questions in one message. Confirm when you've received the product, let the brand know straight away if something changes, and record agreements in writing. Use the communication channel within the campaign where possible.

Great content is important, but how you communicate determines how pleasant a collaboration feels. Brands often work with many creators at the same time. Creators who respond quickly, are clear and keep the brand informed stand out positively.

Respond quickly

Try to respond to messages within one working day. Don't have an answer yet? Send a short message saying you've seen it and when you'll get back to them. This shows the brand they can count on you.

Keep your tone friendly and professional

You don't need to be formal, but stay polite and to the point. Avoid lots of emojis, slang or very short replies like "ok". A friendly, clear message always comes across well.

Be clear and specific

Put all your questions in one message instead of sending lots of separate messages. Be specific: "Should the product be visible in the first three seconds?" is easier to answer than "How should I film it?"

Confirm when you receive the product

Let the brand know when the product has arrived. Is something damaged, missing or not what you expected? Report it straight away, preferably with a photo.

Keep the brand informed

Don't wait until the deadline if something is going wrong. Let the brand know early if you're running late, if you're ill or if something is unclear. Brands are usually understanding, as long as you're honest and let them know in time.

Record agreements

Confirm agreements in writing, for example in a short message. That way you both know what's been agreed, and you avoid misunderstandings later. Where possible, use the communication channel within the campaign, so everything is kept in one place.

Example messages

  • Confirming receipt of the product. "Hi! The package arrived today. Everything looks great. I'll start filming this week and deliver the content before Friday as agreed."
  • Asking a question. "Hi! Quick question about the brief: would you like the product name mentioned in the first few seconds, or is it fine at the end?"
  • Reporting a delay. "Hi! Unfortunately I'm ill and won't make Friday's deadline. Would Tuesday work for you? Sorry for the inconvenience."

What to avoid

Avoid not responding or responding very late, sending lots of short separate messages, responding emotionally or defensively, making agreements only verbally without confirming them, and contacting the brand outside working hours with non-urgent questions.

How do you deliver your content the right way?

Check your content against the brief before you deliver it, and do a quick technical check of the format, image, sound and music. Always deliver the original files in the highest quality, name them clearly and send exactly the versions the brand asked for. Deliver on time through the campaign, add a short note, and wait for approval before you post anything on your own channels.

How do you handle feedback and revisions?

Feedback from brands is a normal part of the job, not personal criticism. Read it calmly, ask questions if something isn't clear, and make the changes within the agreed time. When you resubmit, briefly say what you've changed. If feedback goes beyond what was agreed in the brief, raise it politely. And the best way to keep revisions to a minimum is to read the brief carefully from the start.

How do you read a brand brief properly?

The brief tells you exactly what a brand expects from you. Read it in full before you apply, and pay special attention to the deliverables, key messages, do's and don'ts, deadlines, compensation and usage rights. Make your own checklist, ask questions before you start filming, and check your content against the brief once more before you submit it.

What does a brand expect from you as a creator?

Brands look for creators who are reliable, professional and easy to work with. In practice, that means following the brief, delivering good content on time, communicating clearly, handling feedback well and sticking to agreements. You don't need to be perfect or have a big following. Brands mainly want to be able to count on you.
