What are platform fees and service fees?

TL;DR

Platform fees cover access to software and databases, while service fees cover hands-on campaign support. Understanding the difference helps brands choose between self-serve software and fully managed services.

When working with influencer marketing tools or agencies, invoice costs are often split into platform fees and service fees. Knowing the difference between these two fee structures ensures transparency and helps brands select the right management model.

1. Platform Fees (SaaS & Software Access)

A platform fee is a subscription or usage charge for using influencer marketing software:

  • What It Covers: Access to creator databases, discovery filters, automated workflows, campaign tracking, and real-time analytics dashboards.
  • Payment Structure: Usually billed monthly or annually as a fixed software-as-a-service (SaaS) fee, or calculated as a percentage of overall campaign spend.
  • Best For: In-house marketing teams that want full control over creator discovery, outreach, and campaign execution.

2. Service Fees (Managed Services & Execution)

A service fee is a charge for manual work, strategic guidance, or campaign management provided by experts:

  • What It Covers: Strategy development, creative briefing, contract negotiations, creator matchmaking, content approval, and post-campaign reporting.
  • Payment Structure: Typically charged as a flat project fee, a fixed percentage over creator budgets (agency markups), or an hourly consulting rate.
  • Best For: Brands without dedicated internal capacity that need end-to-end campaign management.

3. Check How the Terms Are Used

The labels are not used the same way everywhere. Some platforms use "service fee" for a percentage added to creator payouts, which covers contracts, invoicing and payment handling rather than hands-on campaign management. Always check what a fee covers, what it is calculated on (a subscription, campaign spend or creator payouts) and whether product-only campaigns are included, so you compare offers like for like.
