A strong hook makes people stop scrolling. Retention is about what happens next: do they keep watching, or do they drop out after five seconds? Retention is one of the most important signals for the TikTok and Instagram algorithms. For UGC that a brand uses in ads, it also directly affects how well the ad performs.
1. Start with a strong hook
Everything starts with the first few seconds. Without a good hook, viewers won't stay long enough to see the rest. Read How to create a strong hook in the first 3 seconds for tips.
2. Cut out every pause
Remove silences, "ums" and moments where nothing happens. Short cuts between sentences (jump cuts) keep the pace high. If a sentence doesn't add anything, leave it out.
3. Change something every few seconds
Viewers lose their attention quickly if the image stays the same for too long. Switch regularly between shots: a close-up, a different angle, a short zoom, text appearing on screen or a product shot. These small changes are often called pattern interrupts.
4. Show, don't just tell
Show the product in use instead of only talking about it. Images keep attention better than explanations, and they make your story more convincing.
5. Use captions
Many people watch without sound. Captions make sure they can still follow your story, and keep their eyes on the screen.
6. Make them curious about what's coming
Hint at something that comes later in the video, such as a result, a tip or a surprise. "The last tip is the one that made the biggest difference." This gives viewers a reason to keep watching. Make sure you always deliver on that promise.
7. Get to the point quickly
Give viewers something valuable early on, rather than saving everything for the end. If they get something useful in the first few seconds, they're more likely to stay for the rest.
8. Keep it as short as possible
A video should be as long as needed, and no longer. Check every part: does this help the story? If not, cut it. Follow the length stated in the brief.
9. Think about the ending
End with a clear call to action, or let the end flow smoothly back into the beginning so the video loops naturally. Videos that people watch more than once often get extra reach.
Check your statistics
On your own TikTok and Instagram channels, you can see in the statistics where viewers drop out of your videos. Look at the moments where many people stop watching, and learn from them for your next video.
Common mistakes
Watch out for a slow start, long explanations without any visuals, the same shot for too long, a video that's longer than necessary, and promising something in the hook that never comes.
